At Mill Rythe Junior School, we want our children to develop a love of art, craft and design by stimulating their creativity and imagination.

Art provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world around us. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Our art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. They learn the core skills of painting, sculpture and drawing and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate their own and others’ work. There is a clear progression throughout these areas as the children move through the school.

We encourage children to explore idea and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers throughout history and across different cultures. Children explore and discuss artists’ work and then move on to learning a range of skills which can be applied to their own work. In turn, they begin to learn to appreciate and enjoy the visual arts and how it enriches all our lives.
