SEND

At Mill Rythe Junior School we feel that every child within our school community should be valued equally, irrespective of their needs, their behaviour or their background. We believe all children should be given the right support and intervention to allow them to reach their potential at the end of their 4 year journey with us. This support may be short term or long term and may be focused on learning, behavioural, social or emotional needs.

We are well-equipped to support a wide range of children’s needs. Our SENCo, Mrs Mott has completed the national SEN qualification and co-ordinates the learning and emotional support for children, working very closely with our teachers and teaching assistants to make sure the needs of all children are met. All children will have teaching time with class teachers, teaching assistants and opportunities to work more independently during lessons in school. Some children will also have access to additional 1:1 and small group teaching sessions to enable them to make rapid progress against a particular target. These sessions are carefully scheduled to ensure that children are not missing out on learning in other areas of the curriculum.

Pastoral Support

We are lucky to have a fully trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSAs), a TALA (Therapeutic Active Listening Assistant) and two Thrive Leaders who work with children experiencing emotional or social difficulties either in or out of school. These sessions take place in dedicated areas of the school (The Rainbow Room and ELSA room) both of which have resources and displays to support the intervention taking place. They work with children in lots of different ways, ranging from group social skills work through to 1:1 support for children who have suffered loss or bereavement. We always seek permission from parents before commencing such work.

If you would like to find out more about how we support children in our school, you may find the Special Educational Needs Policy and SEND information report useful. Alternatively, you are very welcome to book a time to meet with our SENCo Mrs Mott.  Appointments can be booked via the school office. Or contact her directly via email: inclusion@millrythe-jun.hants.sch.uk
